EPDM is an extremely durable synthetic

rubber roofing membrane!

(ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) widely used in low-slope buildings in the United States and worldwide.

Ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM roofing) is the most durable roofing solution that is mostly used in low-slope buildings across the world.

Its two main ingredients, propylene and ethylene are derived from natural gas and oil. EPDM is available in black and white color and in a variety of widths and thicknesses. EPDM can be either mechanically attached and sealed with liquid adhesives or even installed fully adhered.

Several years ago, there was a research that examined several roofing systems, from 28 to 32 years old, and the results proofed that all of them were still performing extraordinary after all these years. In fact, the research found that all of the samples’ characteristic were still performing just below or above the minimum characteristics of a new EPDM membrane. The first step of a research was a thorough roof inspection. After that, the samples were sent to a testing facility for the roofing industry – Momentum Technologies. The laboratory tested EPDM membrane’s crucial performance characteristics and proofed the long-term performance capability of EPDM.

What is EPDM Roofing?

Propylene, ethylene and a small amount of diene monomer are the ingredients of EPDM roofing membrane. These ingredients are synthesized to make a product that is resistant to UV lights and different weather conditions but also has an outstanding low-temperature flexibility.

EPDM can be found in black and white color, with a few minor differences in their performance. Black EPDM has a smooth surface and doesn’t contain any surface granules. White EPDM has several additional benefits – the color is highly reflective, so it can cut the energy costs in half. It’s environmentally friendly solution for extending the durability of your roofing system.

After the thorough research, that tested the durability, weather and UV resistance, longevity and many other factors, the John Manville’s roofing materials experts determined that there is a better way to make this membrane, using extrusion instead of calendaring. In a short period of time, the decision was supported by many pieces of evidence on improving the quality and actually extending the lifespan of the roofing system.

The calendaring process was used for hundreds of years. But over time, this old technique of heat-softening rubber polymer and then forcing it through rollers to make an EPDM membrane wasn’t efficient anymore. It was a good solution for many years, but over time, the limitations have become evident, so it was the right time to try something new.

EPDM is the best solution for Roof Repair

Repairing the roof leak with EPDM roof coatings is the best and the most durable roofing solution. EPDM roof coats are light-weight and durable, so you can rely on them to provide you a durable and resistant solution for your roofing system. So, if you’re looking for a way to repair your roof without adding additional weight, look no further, EPDM is the choice you should make.
